Coral Springs Wildlife Education: How To Get Mice Out Of Your Car
As soon as you notice mice in your car, you need to start taking steps to get them out. If you let the mice stay, they will cause damage to anything they can reach. Some of this will be through chewing or scratching while other damage will just occur naturally as they leave behind urine and feces. In addition to getting the mice out of your car, you need to take preventative action to make sure new ones don’t take their place.
What Doesn’t Work
A quick search will show you plenty of suggestions for getting mice out of your car, but not all are created equally. Despite what some people suggest, don’t use poison to take care of the mouse problem. This is an inhumane method since the poison won’t kill the rodents instantly. Instead, they will be left to suffer, possibly for several days, as they slowly die. To make matters worse, this won’t even solve your problem; instead, it will make it worse. That is because the mice will return to their nest or favorite spot within your car and die there. You would then have to spend time finding their carcasses before removing it and trying your best to get rid of the smell.
You will also see people suggesting repellents like ammonia, mothballs, cayenne pepper, wasabi, and store bought items. These repellents will only be mildly annoying to rodents at best, but won’t convince them to leave.
What Does Work
To effectively get the mice out of your car, you need to make your vehicle unattractive to them and use traps to your advantage. You can either use live cage traps or lethal snap traps. If you plan on killing the mice, then opt for snap traps as they are the most humane method. They will kill them instantly when the spring snaps, unlike glue traps which leave the rodent to die of natural causes. If you don’t feel confident tackling the problem yourself, hire a professional to help you.
Prevent New Mice
After the mice are gone, you should take steps to avoid a repeat of the issue. Keep your car and the area around it clean. This will take away potential hiding spots that may be attracting the mice to your vehicle. At the same time, it removes any potential food source, like crumbs or snacks you keep in your car. You can also make some minor modifications to parts of your car that are particularly tempting. An example would be placing a wire screen over the openings to your engine so mice can’t climb inside.
